Your Brand Is Valuable, Now Is It Profitable - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Your Brand Is Valuable, Now Is It Profitable - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Personal branding has never been as important as it is today. To achieve success in this world, you really need to manage your reputation well; otherwise, people and companies have worldwide reach to find anyone who “does what you do” or “sells what you sell”. Though you may be valuable in the company you work in right now or in the services you offer to people, the question is, are you invaluable? If you quit from your job today or decide to stop offering your services to your clients, would they be able to easily replace you? Make your brand invaluable If you’re an invaluable brand, then no matter how the economy turns, you will have a profitable, resilient edge. But how do you become an invaluable personal brand? How do you remain profitable even during tough economic times? Here are some tips: 1.Keep yourself up to date with the current market trends If you want to be an invaluable brand, it’s important that you’re always up to date with the current market and industry trends. You need to stay on top of things and you should never let your skills become outdated and obsolete. Competition makes it essential to grab every opportunity that comes your way to discover and learn something new. You cannot remain stagnant and hope that you will always be employed or that someone’s always going to be in need of your services. If you don’t keep up, you will be left behind, struggling for survival as other people move forward, achieving success. So always keep studying, learning and discovering. Join classes, sign up for training courses related to your niche, and participate in seminars. Be invaluable by being incredibly knowledgeable about your specialty and industry. 2.Create strong personal connections Engaging with your audience is important, that’s for sure. But more than that, it’s become essential for brands to create strong personal connections. Trust is an invaluable commodity when it comes to business relationships. People don’t trust easily these days, which is why gaining someone’s trust can make you invaluable as well as profitable. Utilize all the means and platforms available to you for interacting and connecting with your audience. Because people prefer communicating in different ways, it’s important that you use many different platforms in order to ensure that you connect with your clients and followers. Social media, for example, has become a vital tool for personal brands to connect on a consistent people with people they know. Yet, even more important than “channel” is HOW you connect.   “Be interested to be interesting”.     Be interested and involved in your connections lives.   Take an interest it what’s important to them, what they’re facing, or what they’re working on.   Think in ways of “how you can help” them in their daily lives and challenges.   Be involved in your community, participate in charitable causes, and find opportunities to give back wherever you can. 3.Be consistent, timely and relevant These three are very important in creating an invaluable brand that is profitable. First of all, you need to be consistent in the services you offer as well as your interactions with people. Avoid being wishy-washy; be true to what your brand stands for and always give what your clients have come to expect, so that your audience won’t become disillusioned and turn to other brands. This is tough since values and personal brands are often sacrificed for a chance at immediate profit. Being timely is also vital nowadays. The digital world has made people incredibly impatient. They demand a lot from brands; they want the quickest response possible to their queries or comments. So do your best to develop systems that work for you, so you can be timely when it comes to responding. And lastly, be relevant. You want people to relate with you, engage with you, and connect with you. If what you offer isn’t relevant to their lives, then there’s really no point in them staying connected with you. Listening is key and the only way for you to gauge if you know what’s important to them.   This will make you an invaluable asset to your clients and customers. To become a truly profitable personal brand, it’s not enough to be valuable. You need to be irreplaceable- someone who delivers on the company brand promise in a way that is unique and relevant. The challenge is that most have not unearthed the identity of their true personal brand and what makes them so unique, which is the most important part of personal branding. To the women of the graduating class of 2004

To the women of the graduating class of 2004 Most of you have not witnessed extreme gender inequality during college, and most of you do not think of yourselves as activists. But I have news for you: The corporate world does not offer equal opportunity, and most of you will need to become activists to create lives which include children and work. But you probably spent your school years hearing that you can be anything you want and that having kids is not something to worry about now. Both of these ideas are misleading. Most likely, you cannot be anything you want if you expect to have kids; you cannot be a mom who goes to weekly tap dance lessons or weekly baseball games and a mom who runs a Fortune 500 company or leads the United Nations team to Rwanda. You have to give up one of those dreams because kids are not compatible with the amount of work required to move up through the management ranks. You need to consider this when planning your life. Sexism at the top remains strong, says Barrons Business Daily in an article touting the successes of women in the workplace. Men may always outnumber women at the top because women are not willing to make the sacrifice of friendships and family life that the jobs normally require, it states. The New York Times magazine chimed in with a cover article highlighting how more women with business degrees from top schools are leaving the work force to stay home with children. Here are some facts to consider: Sixty percent of male managers have kids at home as compared with 40% of women managers. Corporate life was set up so that one person in a couple works and one stays home with the kids. For all the effort men and women have given to changing this system, it remains relatively unchanged for senior executives. These facts come from a recent study commissioned by Congress, which shows that men and women climb the corporate ladder together, and then women with children begin to lag, earning lower salaries. Meanwhile, childless women managers remain on par with the men. Those women with children who continue to climb are more likely to get divorced than the men with kids who continue climbing, says Barrons magazine. The congressional study tells us that women struggle with career issues that dont affect men. Women, not men, typically must choose between a high-powered career and raising kids. And so far, we have not found an answer. Each woman who gives up something a career, a kid, time at the office or at home will tell you the decision was tough. And the jury is out as to what works. The next generation of women will have to try new ways to juggle family and work. Some schools, bless them, are helping women prepare for future balancing acts. At one top medical school, a panel of surgeons fielded questions from students ready to select a specialty. The discussion turned to a surgeons notoriously long and unpredictable hours. A student asked the panel members if they would choose surgery again. The four men on the panel each praised their wives at home for supporting them and said they would choose this specialty again. The lone woman on the panel said she would not choose the specialty because surgeons have so little flexibility and she has had to sacrifice family time to succeed. At this particular school, women choose their specialty with care: Ophthalmology has become popular because it allows for a family life. Consider these issues when you select your field. If you want a family, find and build a career that is compatible with having a family. If you decide on a family-unfriendly career, find a spouse who will take care of the family (a common solution for women at the top). Graduation speakers nationwide are touting opportunity, equality, and ambition. I wish I didnt have to be a wet blanket , but someones gotta do it: Girls, get ready for a corporate world built by men, not women. Think of the workplace as a constant test of your ability to create the life you want. Think of yourself as a trailblazer.

You were just hit by a bus, now what - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

You were just hit by a bus, now what - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career What is your bus coefficient? Meaning, if you were to suddenly be removed from your role what would happen. Imagine that metaphorically  you were just hit by a bus. What are you going to do now? What will happen to your projects? What will happen with your team? Of course, I hope you werent really hit by a bus. The point is that everyone needs to have a succession plan. As part of your career planning efforts at least 20% of your time should be committed to think about what’s next and how you will react if an unexpected event occurs. It doesnt have to be a worst case scenario. If it helps you think about succession planning you can replace “Bus Coefficient” with “Lottery Coefficient” the same rules apply and you can ask yourself “I just won the lottery, now what?” From an optimistic perspective: Imagine you were just promoted or allowed to hire new staff member for your team. How are you going to handle it? What will you do first? Of course, these are the things you can think of after  you finish doing you happy dance. These are things leaders need to consider. As a leader you are expected to have a succession plan in place. You should also consider having a disaster recovery plan in your back pocket. Not that you expect or want to have the worst happen, but things have a way of happening when you least expect it. It’s better to have thought through a list of possibilities and be ready to take action. What if it’s not you, but someone on your team? Imagine your best team member gets poached by the competition. Consider the possibility of your colleague being promoted to be your manager. Think about what would happen if your manager decides to move on. Even if you arent the manager of a group today you may want to think about the business holistically and be ready to make a suggestion and take action when the unexpected promotion, poaching of your best co-worker or even if that errant bus comes along. Do you have an OFTP? The points mentioned above can be used as a  best practice.  Another best practice I learned from a Gulf War Veteran is the OFTP. The One Folder Transition Plan which I wrote about in The Fastest Way to Get Promoted as a way to get people thinking about success planning. How will you handle a transition? Will you be ready when an opportunity arises? Have you taken the time to consider the possibilities yet? Hopefully you were not actually hit by a bus. However, I suggest you imagine a scenario where both good and bad scenarios occur. Having a plan means you have thought through a few possibilities. This is something that can help you Stand Out in Your Career and can make you imminently promotable. Take some time today to imagine what would happen and how you would react in any of these situations. Take a few minutes to write it down and from time to time, perhaps quarterly, review your thoughts. Revise as necessary and make this part of your career planning efforts.

Do You Think It Is A Scam Or A Good Idea To Join A Resume Writing Group?

Do You Think It Is A Scam Or A Good Idea To Join A Resume Writing Group? The answer to the question of whether or not you should join a resume writing group is simple. While I could probably write a book about why you should, I'll let the experts speak for themselves. You can take the best writers in the business and find out all about their writing career in the four corners of the globe. While the writers you meet can tell you about the different genres and styles they are successful with, they will be the best judges of how well their own writing stands up against other writers' work. They are the experts.Even if you are a good resume writer and have some original ideas to show, chances are that they will lean toward the work you have done before. If you do not feel that you are up to the task of improving your writing skills, then maybe you should consider starting from scratch. Instead of simply hiring someone to write your resume, why not start your own writing business? When you create your resume, consider that you are the only one who has seen it. While it might be well-written by a professional, it may still be read by millions of other people. In fact, some resume writing groups will send the same writing sample to each of their clients, meaning that you never know whether or not they have read it.Some people think that the idea of joining a resume writing group is a scam, but I am here to tell you that this is far from the truth. Many of the best resume writing groups in the world are the same websites that sell things like unlimited mailing lists. You can build your list just as easily as you can get yours by doing a recent search for them. I know, I know - that sounds crazy. But if you want to create an email list of supporters, then you need to be able to make sure that all of your emails reach their inboxes. To help you do this, I suggest that you look for the following things: A membership site with free samples, free tutorials, and the occasional f ree membership offer. The more companies that you get involved with, the more traffic that you will receive from the programs. You will see the traffic increase exponentially over time. After you get a basic feel for what is really going on, you may wish to try signing up for the membership for the most successful and established of these programs: The Resume Wizard Self-Service Site. There is really no reason to run away from a forum that has proven results for other people. In fact, if you join a resume writing group, you may end up joining one of the best programs ever created.

Rocking the PJ style #YASSSS - Cubicle Chic

Weekend Outfit // Rocking the PJ style #YASSSS - Cubicle Chic Weekend Outfit // Rocking the PJ style #YASSSS How To Wear, Lifestyle April 23, 2016 0 CommentsEphemeral is this thing called fashion. We’ve all questioned those witch-like pointed toe shoes, and those unmistakably un-stylish Toms, and the floppy hat that make you look like the Paddington bear.  I often wonder about these trends: just how long is it going to last?  Naturally, this new trend of wearing PJ-like articles as normal/formal outfits completely boggled my mind when I first saw it.Infectious is this thing called fashion. If you habitually browse fashion media and publications, you are willingly giving in to the brainwashing power of advertisement.  The more I saw this PJ trend around, the more I caught myself picturing how and with what I would style this look, despite my initial incredulity toward it.Fateful is this thing called fashion. Sometimes, you just know you won’t be able to resist something new, even though something in your gut tells you it’s “not you”. I felt this way about ombré hair, FitBit, and A didas Superstar. And yes I have given into all three, after a few months/years of observation. And this PJ trend eventually got me, too. I got horribly sick so I didn’t wind up going. But I thought this outfit is quite fitting for any fashion conference where you want to stand out and be comfortable for an all day affair. Reduce Job Transition Stress by Accessing the Power of Gratitude - Sterling Career Concepts

Reduce Job Transition Stress by Accessing the Power of Gratitude Reduce Job Transition Stress by Accessing the Power of Gratitude One of my recent posts shared ways to help cope with a job transition, one of which was letting go of how things were supposed to be. Learning to appreciate and have gratitude for what we have is not always easy, but it can increase your inner peace and manage your stress level. This can help in the midst of a job transition, notably one of the most stressful life situations. Long-term studies support gratitude’s effectiveness, suggesting that a positive, appreciative attitude contributes to such things as greater success in work, greater health, peak performance in sports and business, a higher sense of well-being, and even a faster rate of recovery from surgery. While we may acknowledge gratitude’s many benefits, it can still be difficult to sustain. So many of us are trained to notice what is broken, undone or lacking in our lives. For gratitude to meet its full healing potential in our lives, it needs to become more than just words. We have to learn a new way of looking at things and developing a new habit takes time. That’s why practicing gratitude makes so much sense. When we practice giving thanks for all we have, instead of complaining about what we lack, we give ourselves the chance to see all of life as an opportunity and a blessing. Remember that gratitude isn’t a blindly optimistic approach in which the bad things in life are whitewashed or ignored. It’s more a matter of where we put our focus and attention. Negative things exist in this world, but when we focus on the positive, we gain a feeling of wellbeing and balance. There are many things to be grateful for during a job transition: a supportive network, a spouse or significant other who listens and really hears, good health, a new interview lined up, or additional time to earn a new professional certification or pursue one of your passions. What’s on your list? Four ways to start practicing gratitude today: Keep a gratitude journal in which you list things for which you are thankful. You can make daily, weekly or monthly lists. Greater frequency may be better for creating a new habit, but just keeping that journal where you can see it will remind you to think in a grateful way. Reading through your journal on some of your more frustrating days during a job search will help refocus you. Practice gratitude around the dinner table or make it part of your family’s nighttime routine. Find the hidden blessing in a challenging situation. Admittedly, this may be hard to do in certain scenarios, but looking for the silver lining in any cloud is a good practice to implement and pass on to your children. When you feel like complaining, make a gratitude list or read through your gratitude journal instead. You may be amazed by how much better you feel. As you practice, an inner shift will begin to occur, and you may discover new feelings of contentment and hopefulness. That sense of fulfillment is gratitude at work boosting your spirits during a job transition.
